The government has announced plans to extend the Free Senior High School (FSHS)policy to private schools, beginning next academic year.

The decision was disclosed during the unveiling of revised guidelines for school selection ahead of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Under the updated selection process, students will now be allowed to choose seven schools, an increase from the previous six options.

The selection period is scheduled to run from May 27 to June 6.

Addressing the media, Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Appak, explained that the inclusion of private schools in the FSHS programme is aimed at expanding capacity and gradually phasing out the double-track system.

“As part of our campaign promise, we have been working diligently to bring private senior high schools on board in the Free SHS programme”.

He added that the initiative followed extensive engagements and consultations with private school stakeholders.

“We strongly believe that fulfilling this commitment will play a key role in eliminating the double-track system and improving access to quality secondary education”.
