The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged Members of Parliament to approach their duties with principle, reason, and civility as the House resumes sitting.

He called on MPs to engage in debates firmly but respectfully and to resolve differences through reasoning, not violence.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Speaker Bagbin stressed the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations governing parliamentary proceedings. He warned that any Member of Parliament who engages in misconduct during sessions will face consequences.

He reminded MPs that the work of the House is too crucial to be derailed by behavior that does not serve the public interest, hence the honeymoon with the rules is over, emphasizing the need for a renewed sense of responsibility.

Speaker Bagbin also announced that both he and the Deputy Speakers will enforce the standing orders more strictly and will not tolerate disorder or absenteeism.

He emphasized that it is time for Parliament to raise its standards, not through words alone, but through discipline, active participation, preparation, and respect for procedure. These, he noted, are the pillars of an effective legislature.
