The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a stern warning to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region, threatening legal action against those who fail to remove unauthorized billboards from road medians by Monday, June 2, 2025.
The move follows a failed engagement with the assemblies. Many of the Assemblies did not attend a scheduled meeting with the Authority to discuss a compliance roadmap.
NRSA Director-General Abraham Amaliba, in a media briefing, expressed disappointment over the absence of key assembly representatives, interpreting their posture as defiance.
“We invited all of them through the Local Government Ministry. They misunderstood and assumed the invitation was extended to all assemblies nationwide, which is why some came from outside Accra. Those within Accra, who were required to attend, failed to show up. We are treating their absence as deliberate noncompliance, and we will proceed to sue the assemblies that have ignored our directive.”
Initially, the NRSA had set a 21-day deadline for billboard removal and intended to use the meeting as an opportunity to provide an extension.
However, given the apparent disregard from relevant assemblies, the Authority now views legal enforcement as the only viable course of action.
“This means they are not interested in complying. So, what we are going to do is meet them in court,” Amaliba stated.
The NRSA insists that removing unauthorized billboards is crucial for public safety, citing concerns over visual distractions and potential hazards to both pedestrians and motorists.
