Parliamentary proceedings were abruptly adjourned on Tuesday, June 10, after a heated confrontation erupted over an attempt by the Minority Caucus to make a statement on the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

The disagreement began when Dr. Ayew Afriyie, Ranking Member on the Health Committee, insisted on addressing the House regarding the nurses’ industrial action.

However,
First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor refused to admit the statement, citing procedural concerns.

Tensions boiled over when the Speaker ordered the Parliamentary Marshal to remove Dr. Afriyie from the chamber.

The directive sparked protests from Minority MPs, leading to heated exchanges between members.

Amid disruptions, the Speaker adjourned proceedings to Wednesday, leaving the issue unresolved.

The Minority Caucus has since condemned the move, arguing that the nurses’ strike is a national crisis that deserves urgent parliamentary attention.

Meanwhile, the GRNMA strike continues to disrupt healthcare services across the country, with long queues, delayed treatments, and emergency cases being turned away at public hospitals.

The government has called for further engagements with the union, but negotiations remain stalled, deepening the crisis.
