Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has declined to refer Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, the Effiduase-Asokore MP, to the Privileges Committee.

This follows a heated clash in Parliament on Monday, sparked by Dr. Afriyie’s attempt to deliver an urgent statement on the nationwide nurses’ strike.

Tensions boiled over when First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor blocked the request, citing procedural breaches. When Dr. Afriyie insisted, Ahiafor ordered him out of the chamber — a move that triggered strong protests from Minority MPs and nearly escalated into a physical confrontation.

Speaking on the floor today, Speaker Bagbin acknowledged the seriousness of the ongoing nurses’ strike, which has disrupted healthcare services since June 4. But he criticized Dr. Afriyie for sidestepping proper channels, emphasizing that urgent statements must follow due process.

He reminded MPs that the title “Honourable” comes with responsibility — and respect for the Chair and Parliament as an institution.

Despite the sharp reprimand, Bagbin stopped short of taking disciplinary action.

Meanwhile, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin pledged full cooperation from his side of the House.
