The Pru East District Assembly, under the leadership of District Chief Executive (DCE) Abdul Nasir Dauda, has officially banned the use of gas cylinders and coalpots at the Yeji market square in the Bono East Region.

The move follows a series of fire outbreaks recorded at various market centres nationwide — with Yeji among the affected areas. Authorities say the ban is a proactive measure to prevent future incidents and protect lives and property.

Mr. Dauda announced the ban during a media interaction following the commissioning of 30 newly constructed lockable stores for market women in Yeji. The stores, funded under the District Assembly Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT 7), aim to boost local economic activity and improve trading conditions.

The DCE warned that traders who flout the directive and continue cooking within the market premises will face strict sanctions.

At the same briefing, the President of the Bono East Regional Fishmongers Association, Madam Juliana Gidisu, commended the Assembly for its efforts in improving the market’s infrastructure. She appealed for similar developmental attention to be extended to the fish market.

The Assembly says it will continue engaging with traders to ensure compliance and support alternative cooking solutions where needed.
