The Energy Committee of Parliament, led by Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, Member of Parliament for Ho West, has held a strategic meeting with the Petroleum Commission to review the regulator’s work plans, financial outlook, and challenges within Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector.

In his opening remarks, Chairman Bedzrah stressed that the engagement was part of Parliament’s oversight mandate, aimed at gaining deeper insight into the operations of agencies under the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

However, the absence of both the Minister for Energy and his Deputy was noted with concern by some committee members, who expressed disappointment over the lack of ministerial representation at such a critical forum.

Addressing the Committee, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, Emefa Hardcastle, presented an overview of the Commission’s mandate to regulate and monitor upstream oil and gas activities.

She outlined the Commission’s core responsibilities, including:

Resource and operations management

Petroleum policy coordination

Oversight of local content development

Management of petroleum data

Enforcement of health, safety, and environmental standards

Ms. Hardcastle also revealed that the Commission is considering amendments to its legal framework to improve regulatory efficiency and better execute its mandate.

The meeting concluded with a renewed call for continued engagement between Parliament and the Petroleum Commission, with both sides emphasizing the need for collaboration and shared vision to drive sustainable growth in Ghana’s energy sector.
