The Ghana Police Service has launched a probe into a suspected case of arson after a fire tore through the official residence of Afigya Kwabre South Municipal Chief Executive, Pearl Ankrah, on Saturday night, 21 June.

Eyewitness footage, now circulating widely on social media, shows flames engulfing sections of the residence.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, but the blaze had already caused significant damage.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as Ankrah was not at home at the time.

Early investigations by the Ghana Police Service point to a deliberate act, and two individuals are currently in custody.

The fire follows escalating political tension in the area, particularly surrounding Ankrah’s nomination by President John Mahama, a move that sparked backlash from some members of the local National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Two months prior, disgruntled party supporters had staged protests, accusing Ankrah of disconnecting from the grassroots. One faction even issued threats to torch the assembly building.

A source close to the MCE confirmed she is safe but “deeply shaken.”

Meanwhile, a regional NDC official condemned the incident as “criminal and unacceptable,” adding that the Ashanti Regional Security Council has been briefed on the matter.
