President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Brussels as a key advocate for the GAVI Alliance’s global vaccine replenishment efforts.

His participation in the Global Summit on Health and Prosperity through Immunisation underscores his continued commitment to equitable access to life-saving vaccines.

This was communicated in a statement released by the Presidency Communications and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communication on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

The summit, co-hosted by the European Union, the Gates Foundation, and the Vaccine Alliance, seeks to rally international support for Gavi’s ambitious 2026–2030 strategy. The initiative aims to immunise an additional 500 million children, save over 8 million lives, and shield populations from up to 150 disease outbreaks, delivering more than $100 billion in economic gains.

President Mahama’s attendance at the summit reflects his long-standing advocacy for global vaccine access, especially for lower-income countries. Drawing from Ghana’s own experience with the transformative impact of immunisation, he emphasized the urgent need to fully fund Gavi’s mission to improve global health outcomes.

President Mahama previously supported the Alliance in 2013, championing efforts to increase immunisation rates and protect children’s health. He maintains that continued investment in Gavi will not only save lives but also unlock economic potential and enhance global health security.

The Brussels summit is expected to mobilise renewed commitments from traditional and emerging donors, governments, international organisations, civil society, and private sector leaders.

Since its inception in 2000, Gavi has helped immunise over one billion children, a feat credited with preventing more than 18.8 million deaths and yielding over $250 billion in economic benefits for developing economies.

While is Brussels, President Mahama will also hold discussions with many leaders, including the President of the EU Council of Ministers and Bill Gate.
