Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has called on all New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirants to focus on presenting their achievements and vision to delegates rather than engaging in politics of insults.

Speaking at the official launch of the Patriotic Institute on Wednesday, June 25, at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, Prof. Oquaye emphasized the need for a campaign rooted in competence, discipline, and mutual respect.

He recounted the party’s tradition of issue-based internal elections, stressing that the NPP has always believed in the principle that “knowledge is power” and that Ghana should be led by individuals who are qualified and properly trained.

Citing historical examples, Prof. Oquaye recalled the 1992 flagbearer race where former President John Agyekum Kufuor emerged victorious. Despite others losing in the primaries, fellow aspirants, including former MPs and respected party stalwarts, united behind him and campaigned across the country without uttering a single disparaging word.

He also pointed to the 2007 NPP presidential primaries held in Legon, Accra, where despite intense competition, aspirants conducted themselves with dignity and supported the eventual winner, again demonstrating the party’s longstanding tradition of discipline and unity.

Prof. Oquaye urged current presidential aspirants to emulate the example of past party leaders by presenting concrete plans and track records to delegates.

He warned that disunity and personal attacks could jeopardize the party’s chances of returning to power in the next general elections.
