President John Mahama has teamed up with philanthropist Bill Gates to explore ways of strengthening Ghana’s healthcare landscape when the two met in Brussels on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

The dialogue, held just before the Gavi Vaccine Alliance’s pledging session, focused on enhancing access to quality health services and the future of immunisation in Ghana.

President Mahama shared highlights from the meeting on Facebook, emphasizing major developments such as the Free Primary Healthcare initiative, progress with the National Vaccine Institute, and the decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIS) to improve funding and healthcare access.

“These conversations reflect the power of global partnerships in building sustainable health systems,” Mahama wrote.

He also thanked Mr. Gates and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for their ongoing investment in Ghana, especially through the Gavi Alliance whose mission supports vaccine access in low- and middle-income countries.

Later, President Mahama sat down with José Manuel Barroso, Chair of the Gavi Board and former European Commission President. Mr. Barroso acknowledged Ghana’s consistent backing of Gavi’s funding efforts, thanking Mahama for his leadership.

As part of the pledging session, President Mahama is expected to speak out in support of greater investment in Gavi’s work, championing Ghana’s dual role as both a recipient of aid and a global voice for health equity.
