The Head of Media at Infinity970, a non-profit organization, Rev. Emmanuel Lamptey, has urged Ghanaians and the government to intensify efforts to combat air pollution, which he says poses serious health risks to the population.

Rev. Lamptey made the call during the organization’s Clean Air Awareness Campaign supported by Breathe Cities, held on Wednesday, July 2, at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle-Odawna station in Accra.

Speaking to Happyghana.com, he noted that emissions from vehicles, the burning of waste, and dust from unpaved roads contribute significantly to air pollution, endangering the health of commuters and residents alike.

Citing 2022 data from the World Health Organization, he revealed that approximately 28,000 people die each year due to air pollution-related conditions.

He appealed particularly to drivers whose vehicles emit excessive fumes to help curb pollution. He also encouraged the public to report environmental infractions via 0579724072.

Reported cases, he said, would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for policy enforcement and government action.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman of the GPRTU at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle-Odawna Branch, Alhaji Issah Mohammed, praised Infinity970’s initiative and pledged the union’s full support.

He assured that drivers at the station would do their best to promote cleaner air.

He also called on all Ghanaians to rally behind the campaign to help end air pollution, which he described as a serious public health threat.
