The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reportedly passed away.
According to sources close to the family and party, Mr. Kumi died on Monday, July 7, 2025, though the cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed. As of now, both the NPP and the Parliament of Ghana are yet to issue formal statements or announce funeral arrangements.
Mr. Kumi was serving his first term in Parliament, having emerged victorious in one of the most contentious races during the December 2024 general elections.
The Akwatia constituency, located in the Eastern Region, became a major flashpoint in the 2024 elections. The seat had historically swung between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with both parties treating it as a priority battleground.
Ernest Kumi secured the seat for the NPP in a closely contested race marked by allegations of vote buying, irregularities at some polling stations, and heightened political tension in the lead-up to the polls
