President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched a nine-member committee to manage the transfer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the University of Ghana.

The move is intended to enhance the efficiency and long-term vision of the facility as a premier centre for medical training and service.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, President Mahama emphasized that the transition will align the hospital with its original purpose to serve as both a teaching hospital and a beacon of medical excellence in West Africa.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the University of Ghana into a hub for not just academic theory but practical, cutting-edge healthcare innovation.

The committee, which includes representatives from academia along with the Ministers of Health and Education, has been given a three-month mandate to oversee the transition and present recommendations on governance, operations, and staffing.

The UGMC, located on the Legon campus, was originally envisioned during the tenure of late President John Evans Atta Mills.

President Mahama reiterated that the facility was always intended to operate under the university’s purview to ensure high standards and efficient management.

However, the hospital currently managed by the Ghana Health Service is running at only 40% of its potential capacity.

The president expressed hope that placing UGMC under the university’s oversight would revitalize its operations and fully realize its mission.
