Galamsey Fight: Seven Arrested for Illegal Mining in Upper Denkyira West

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested seven individuals in connection with illegal mining activities at Abora in the Upper Denkyira West District.

The suspects, Latif Abdul Gyimah, 55yrs, Mohammed Bello, 44yrs, George Azu, 52yrs, Kingsley Owusu, 23yrs, Sampson Afadzi, 45yrs, Simon Atakpo, 21yrs, and Andrews Otto, 26yrs, were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation at a mining site.

According to a statement posted on the official Ghana Police Service Facebook page on Thursday, July 10, the operation uncovered a cache of weapons and equipment used in the illegal activity.

Items retrieved include one single-barrel shotgun, two Mossberg 500A12GA pump-action shotguns with serial numbers T069032 and T075882, and 26 live cartridges.

Additionally, the police seized two excavators, two Hyundai excavator monitors, three unregistered motorbikes, one unregistered Haojin tricycle, and a newly installed water pump machine. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to recover more excavators from the area.

All seven suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. The recovered exhibits have been secured as part of ongoing legal procedures.
