Ablekuma North rerun: Election Watch calls on NPP not to withdraw

Democracy watchdog group Election Watch Ghana has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reverse its decision to boycott a crucial election rerun scheduled for Friday in selected polling stations within Ablekuma North Constituency, Greater Accra Region.

The rerun, ordered by the Electoral Commission (EC), follows disputes over the results of the December 2024 parliamentary elections.

The NPP insists its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, was the rightful winner and claims the EC has deviated from proper legal procedure by calling for fresh voting instead of merely declaring results.

In its statement on Thursday, July 10, Election Watch Ghana emphasized that participation in the rerun is essential for fostering civic engagement and bolstering public trust in democratic institutions.

The group argued that non-participation could hinder efforts to strengthen the electoral process.

“We urge the NPP to reconsider to a transparent and credible election,” the statement read, also calling on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to work collaboratively on broader electoral reforms to meet constitutional and international standards” the group shared in a statement.
