The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has announced the suspension of its planned industrial action, following renewed commitments from government and stakeholders to fully implement their collective agreement.

This decision was reached after a meeting between GRNMA and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, as well as further discussions with key government agencies including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

During the meeting, the final two unresolved issues from an earlier negotiation—an 8% non-basic allowance and fuel allowance—were addressed.

The government agreed to the following:

Non-Basic Allowance:

Authorities acknowledged discrepancies in how the existing allowance has affected nurses and midwives and pledged urgent action to correct them.

Fuel Allowance: Eligible staff will receive this benefit based on government-approved rates, not at the previously suggested commercial rate.

Budget Commitments: Remaining benefits outlined in the agreement will be included in the national budget for 2026.
In addition to these financial matters, the government also agreed to:

Direct its agencies to implement ongoing professional development programs, renewal of licenses, a proposed 13th-month allowance, and medical subsidies.
Ensure all nurses and midwives complete the required training hours and obtain valid licenses by the end of December 2025, ahead of a national enforcement deadline in January 2026.

GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, expressed cautious optimism following the meeting.

She criticized the earlier delays in implementing the agreement, blaming government inaction during a leadership transition and budget oversight.

She reassured Members that leadership will continue to hold the government accountable for every promise made and thanked all Stakeholders for their support, including press, the public and fellow trade unions.
