Tony Aidoo blasts Special Prosecutor over frequent media engagements

Former Senior Presidential Aide and governance expert Dr. Tony Aidoo

Former Senior Presidential Aide and governance expert Dr. Tony Aidoo has issued a scathing critique of Ghana’s Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, accusing him of failing to deliver on his mandate to fight corruption.

Dr. Aidoo expressed deep disappointment over what he described as the Special Prosecutor’s lack of meaningful convictions since assuming office.

“He talks big and small. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. He is a shame. He has never succeeded in any prosecution on corruption, so what are we paying him for?”

Dr. Aidoo’s remarks come at a critical moment, as the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has just announced charges against seven individuals and three companies in connection with a GH₵280 million extortion and money laundering scheme allegedly perpetrated within the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

Among those charged is former NPA CEO Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, along with other current and former staff of the Authority and directors of private companies believed to have facilitated the laundering of illicit proceeds.

The OSP alleges that Abdul-Hamid personally received GH₵24 million, while the remaining funds were distributed through a network of shell companies and intermediaries.

Dr. Aidoo criticized the Special Prosecutor’s frequent media engagements, suggesting that they have not translated into tangible legal outcomes.

“If you build up your case, the judges will not ignore the evidence. But if you fail to provide convincing evidence, then you won’t get anything. I don’t think he is building his cases well; he talks too much.”

He concluded with a pointed piece of advice:

“I will advise him to talk less and do well.”
