Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has issued a clarion call for unity, self-reflection, and political renewal within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking at the NPP’s National Annual Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Stadium, Afenyo-Markin described the party’s loss as a “crucible” moment not the end, but a test of resilience.

“This is a time of transition… We are in a season that demands sober reflection, radical unity, and a return to first principles, we are not defeated”

The Minority Leader cautioned against complacency and internal divisions, urging members to resist factionalism and focus on collective purpose. Quoting former President John Agyekum Kufuor, he reminded delegates,

“It is better to be a cleaner in a party in power than the General Secretary of a party in opposition.”

He likened the NPP’s path forward to that of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who rose from political isolation to international leadership. According to him, the NPP too must rebuild not with slogans, but with values and results.

“Internal discord, suspicions, and disunity have cost us. We must learn from our losses, and do so quickly.”

He called on party youth, especially TESCON, to embrace leadership with respect and purpose.

“Don’t insult the elders. Engage them. Absorb their wisdom and build with purpose.”

Ending on a hopeful note, Afenyo-Markin declared:

“Yes, we lost the 2024 elections in a big way. But… the elephant has only stumbled. It has not been defeated.”
