Supreme Court Rescinds Arrest Warrant for Broadcaster Kevin Taylor

The Supreme Court of Ghana has overturned a bench warrant issued for the arrest of US-based Ghanaian broadcaster, Kevin Taylor, in a landmark 4-1 majority decision delivered on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

A five-member panel led by Justice Tanko ruled that the warrant, originally issued in a contempt case, was procedurally flawed and violated Taylor’s constitutional right to a fair hearing and due process.

The majority decision was supported by Justices Senyo Dzamefe, Suurbaareh, and Philip Bright Mensah. Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu was the sole dissenter.

Taylor, known for his hard-hitting political commentary and frequent criticism of Ghana’s judiciary, had been cited for contempt over remarks he made about Justice Eric Kyei Baffour during the trial of former COCOBOD CEO, Dr. Stephen Opuni.

The court’s ruling effectively nullifies the arrest order and reaffirms the constitutional protection of due process, even for individuals who express controversial or critical views.

Legal analysts say the decision could set a precedent in balancing freedom of expression with respect for judicial authority.
