Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has unveiled a €200 million infrastructure proposal aimed at elevating the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) into a leading hub of academic excellence.

Speaking at a stakeholder briefing on Wednesday, the Minister highlighted that despite borrowing constraints due to Ghana’s engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the government is pursuing innovative funding models through strategic partnerships.

“There is a proposal under review for over €200 million to support aggressive infrastructure development at UENR. Because of the IMF invitation, the Republic of Ghana is unable to borrow directly at this time, but we are actively reviewing possibilities through credible partnerships,” Haruna Iddrisu said.

The proposed investment will focus on revamping lecture halls, laboratories, student accommodation, and administrative buildings to support UENR’s growing student population and academic programs.

To mobilize funding, the Ministry is engaging private institutions and corporate organizations to contribute through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

“A week ago, I met with the Chief Executive of SIC Life. He expressed interest in extending support to the sector by constructing new hostels. His preferred campuses for this CSR initiative are UENR and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST),” the Minister added.

Haruna Iddrisu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and innovation-driven growth in the education sector, noting that UENR’s development is central to achieving long-term national goals in energy and natural resource management.
