Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has highlighted a significant milestone achieved by the Ghana cedi in the first half of 2025.

Delivering the 2025 mid-year budget review on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, July 24, Dr. Forson attributed the cedi’s progress to an increase in gross international reserves and a rate of appreciation that surpasses gains made in several previous years.

“The Ghana cedi has demonstrated exceptional resilience and strength in recent months,” Dr. Forson stated, referencing the steady appreciation of the currency which began early this year. “At the end of June 2025, the Ghana cedi appreciated by 42.6% against the U.S. dollar, 30.3% against the British pound, and 25.6% against the Euro.”

He noted that during the same period in 2024, the cedi experienced declining pressure, making the current appreciation a “significant reversal.”

Dr. Forson emphasized that the cedi has reversed nearly all depreciations recorded between 2022 and 2024. “Mr. Speaker, it is important for us to note that this is the first time such a level of appreciation has been recorded in the 60-year history of the Ghana cedi.”
