Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has revealed that the Ministry has uncovered two separate incidents involving military-grade ammunition.

According to him, the first, dating back prior to 2024, involved a direct theft from GAF stores, while the second involved a transfer of rounds to National Security that has yet to be properly documented or explained.

“In 2024, there was an incident of ammunition moving from the Ghana Armed Forces to National Security. As we speak, the National Security Secretariat under President Mahama is investigating the movement of ammunition.”

This revelation marks a critical development in government’s efforts to curb the unauthorized circulation of weapons, a case the Minister linked to the rise in chieftaincy-related conflicts across the country.

He emphasized that, “Beyond that particular case is another one that we have uncovered. Prior to the 2024 incident, there was also theft of ammunition within the Ghana Armed Forces. I am raising this because such ammunitions find their way into the hands of people who are not well trained and have ulterior motives.”

The Defence Ministry has ordered the National Security Secretariat to urgently account for the undocumented transfer and trace the missing rounds.

Dr. Omane Boamah reiterated government’s commitment to addressing the ammunition breaches with transparency and accountability.
