The Minority in Parliament has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Maher Kheir, raising alarm over alleged electoral violence and intimidation during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11.

The petition follows a dramatic walkout from Parliament ahead of the 2025 Mid-year Budget Review, which the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh Dompreh said was a protest against the “deepening threat to Ghana’s democratic processes.”

“Increasingly, electoral violence is rearing its ugly head in our fledgling democracy. The recent rerun in 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North is clearly revealing”, Annoh Dompreh intoned on the floor of Parliament.

The rerun was marred by violent scenes, including assaults on former MP Hawa Koomson, NPP candidate Nana Akua Afriyie, and journalists covering the elections. Two suspects have since been arrested and are assisting police investigations.

“We cannot be part of the mid-year budget review. To the extent that these acts of violence are not addressed and are visited on us at home, we are exiting”, the Minority Chief Whip chimed.
