President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the recent killing of three students in Bawku and Nalerigu, describing the events as deeply troubling. President Mahama, says the shootings are “unacceptable”.

Gunmen reportedly stormed school campuses over the weekend, opening fire and prompting mass panic and disruption. The violence has forced teachers and public servants to flee the area out of fear for their safety.

Speaking at the Jubilee House during a visit by the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, President Mahama expressed concern over the deteriorating security in the region. He noted that the killings had dealt a significant blow to the Otumfuo-led peace committee’s efforts to restore calm.

“We cannot accept a situation where children are shot at school,” Mahama declared. “This is a national crisis, and those fueling the violence are determined to undermine peace”, President Mahama intoned.

In a decisive move, the President revealed he has directed the Ghana Armed Forces to shift their role in Bawku from peacekeeping to peace enforcement. He warned that troops will now deal firmly with individuals engaged in criminal activity.

“This means the military will adopt a more robust approach against anyone involved in violence,” he added.

Mahama also urged communities in other conflict-prone areas, including Nkwanta, to embrace dialogue and stop further escalation.
