The Greater Accra Regional Security Council will on Monday, August 4, begin demolishing unauthorized structures on the protected Tema Ramsar Site.

The exercise targets areas including Communities 5, 6, 10, 11, and 12, where encroachers have erected buildings in clear violation of environmental laws.

Regional Minister Linda Ocloo, during a surprise inspection this week, expressed outrage at the scale of illegal development, describing it as a direct threat to the ecological health of the Ramsar Site.

She vowed to take swift and decisive action to stop the destruction and reclaim the wetland.

“This is a protected area. We won’t sit back while private developers destroy its environmental value,” the Minister stated.

Madam Ocloo also warned individuals involved in selling lands within the Ramsar enclave to stop immediately or face prosecution.

She stressed that the government will not allow commercial activities on protected lands and will use legal means to stop offenders.

Authorities have advised residents and occupants of illegal structures to evacuate and remove their belongings before Monday to avoid property loss or damage.

The Tema Ramsar Site, recognized under the international Ramsar Convention, supports biodiversity, controls floods, and purifies water.

REGSEC says the demolition forms part of a broader push to reclaim and protect sensitive environmental zones across the region.
