In a moving tribute to one of Ghana’s most beloved music icons, thousands of Ghanaians gathered at the Independence Square on Saturday night for a candlelight vigil honoring the late Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

The vigil held exactly one week after his passing on Saturday, July 26, 2025 served as both a memorial and a celebration of the legendary highlife musician’s life, legacy, and impact on Ghana’s cultural identity.

Organized by supporters and music industry stakeholders, the event drew a large crowd that included fans, celebrities, politicians, and prominent figures from Ghana’s creative arts sector.

As candles flickered in the night sky, attendees sang along to Daddy Lumba’s timeless hits, including “Aben Wo Ha,” “Yentie Obiaa,” and “Sika,” creating an atmosphere that was both emotional and uplifting.

In an interview with Happy FM, one fan described Daddy Lumba as a national treasure.

“What we are doing here tonight goes beyond mourning, it’s a celebration of a life well-lived. Daddy Lumba is not just a musician; he is a music legend. What he achieved is unmatched. He has left us to be with the Lord, but his music lives on.”

Another mourner shared the personal impact of his music:

“I’m someone who grows emotionally attached to things, and Daddy Lumba’s songs have been with me since childhood. His death hit me hard. His music is part of who I am.”

The vigil marked a significant moment of national unity, as fans from across regions and generations came together to honor the man whose voice defined an era.

Since the announcement of his death, tributes have poured in from around the world, highlighting Daddy Lumba’s unmatched influence in African music and his role as a cultural icon.

As Ghanaians continue to mourn, plans for a state-assisted funeral are reportedly underway, with many calling for a lasting national monument to commemorate his contribution to Ghana’s musical and cultural heritage.
