President John Dramani Mahama has praised Ghana’s major health reforms, declaring health as the foundation of national prosperity.

Speaking at the opening of the Africa Health Sovereignty summit in Accra, he emphasized some key reforms in the country’s health system which according to him, has shaped the country’s health care system.

“Health is the engine of productivity and the bedrock of inclusive growth”.

President Mahama mentioned that, the country’s NHIS uncapping has been a major reform, adding that, “GH¢3.5 billion in new fiscal space will expand health coverage nationwide”.

President Mahama indicated that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is a sovereign innovation aimed at mobilising public, private, and philanthropic capital to tackle chronic disease burdens like hypertension and diabetes.

“Our launch of the Primary Health Care Programme in the coming months, along with the recruitment of community health volunteers, will improve the general health and wellness of our citizens, marking a significant step forward in preventive care. This is not a vision of the future. It is the present reality of health sovereignty in Ghana.”

President Mahama cited WHO data showing that every $1 invested in health yields up to $4 in returns, especially in Africa’s youthful economies.

“We are building systems that create jobs, reduce inequalities, and uphold dignity.”
