President John Dramani Mahama has suspended all official engagements for the remainder of the week in response to a national tragedy that claimed the lives of eight individuals in a helicopter crash on Wednesday.

In a press statement issued by the Presidency Communications Directorate, it was announced that the country will observe three days of national mourning beginning Thursday, August 7, 2025.

“The government, through the Chief of Staff, has directed that all flags be flown at half-mast until further notice,” the statement said.

Chief of staff Julius Debrah earlier confirmed the deaths of Dr Edward Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence, Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – Minister for Environment, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman, NDC, Mr Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary candidate, Squadron leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo. The tragedy
has sent shockwaves throughout the nation, prompting an outpouring of grief and solidarity from citizens and public officials alike.

The tragedy marks one of the most devastating air incidents in recent years and has drawn attention to the safety of domestic air operations. Investigations into the cause of the crash are expected to commence immediately.

The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, called for unity and support for the bereaved families during this difficult time.
