Deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Yussif Sulemana, says the government will continue the late Environment Minister Dr. Murtala Mohammed’s efforts to repeal LI 2462, the law permitting mining in forest reserves following his death in last week’s helicopter crash.

Mr. Sulemana disclosed that Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, now acting as Environment Minister, will carry forward the initiative.

“We are not against mining, but it must be done responsibly,” he stressed. “From now on, the policies we put in place must be strictly implemented if we are to win this fight.”

He added that confronting illegal mining would be the most fitting way to honour the victims of the crash, pledging a two-pronged approach: removing miners from forest reserves and cracking down on those operating on water bodies.

Mr. Sulemana also announced a forthcoming documentary showcasing the Blue Water Guard initiative, which targets illegal mining on rivers and destroys unauthorized equipment
