Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has condemned what he described as tribal and religious bigotry in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race.

Addressing party members in New York at the NPP USA 33rd Anniversary celebration, Dr. Bawumia criticized some contenders for running campaigns based on ethnicity and religion.

He referenced a viral video of flagbearer aspirant Bryan Acheampong, who reportedly told delegates that the NPP lost Kusasi votes in 2024 because Bawumia is Mamprusi. Dr. Bawumia dismissed the claim as “tribal bigotry.”

He also accused another contender of “playing the religion card” against him, while citing comments from Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign coordinator, Asomah-Cheremeh, who urged delegates not to support him because his wife, Samira Bawumia, was allegedly not a true Ghanaian.

Dr. Bawumia said he was disheartened that, after years of service to the party, some colleagues were using his faith and ethnicity as political weapons.

“These attacks do not represent the values of the NPP but the mindset of bigots,” he stated.
