The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has warned healthcare facilities against charging illegal fees from subscribers of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Speaking during a working visit to the Ahafo Region, where he met the Regional Minister, NHIA staff, and the Goaso Traditional Council, Dr. Bampoe revealed that the Authority has established a taskforce to identify and report facilities engaged in co-payment or other unlawful charges.

He cautioned that any service provider found guilty will be compelled to refund all monies collected illegally and face prosecution.

Dr. Bampoe emphasized that with government , ensuring realistic tariffs and timely payment of claims, there is no justification for service providers to exploit subscribers.

“The habit of charging illegal fees must stop. Such practices undermine the scheme’s credibility, and we will deal decisively with offending facilities,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the NHIA Regional Director for Ahafo, Mawuli George, said the region is on course to achieve universal health coverage by the end of 2025, with about 80 percent of the population expected to be enrolled.

He assured that his team is working to make the NHIS more attractive and effective by addressing challenges that discourage people from subscribing.
