President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s two-term presidential limit, declaring he will not contest the 2028 elections.
Speaking during a state visit to Singapore, Mahama said his decision strengthens his ability to enforce fiscal discipline and curb election-year overspending.
“I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” he stated during bilateral talks with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Mahama also highlighted economic gains under his administration since his 2024 return, including falling inflation, lower interest rates, and a stronger cedi.
His remarks directly counter claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party that he intends to seek a third term.
