The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has denied claims of any involvement in the replacement of the popular inscriptions Akwaaba and Woezor to Oobaakɛ at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

A statement released by the authority on Thursday, August 28, categorically referenced a series of claims on social media about the change being made on the order and approval of the GTA.

The authority in the statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer Maame Efua Houadjeto, further explained that the words ‘Woezor’, ‘Akwaaba’ which mean welcome in Ewe and Akan respectively, form part of a collective whole regarding Ghana’s cultural heritage — seeking no form of consideration of one over any other. “The GTA wishes to put in the public domain that we do not know anything about it and we did not order or approve the change of the inscriptions on the signage.”

The public is urged to disregard any form of narrative that positions the GTA as the issuant of this order and continually support the Kwame Memorial Park and tourism in Ghana. “We therefore urge the general public and stakeholders to disregard the false information and continue to support the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park as a symbol of national pride and unity.”
