The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has encouraged young Ghanaians to take advantage of digital apprenticeship initiatives to create jobs for themselves and reduce reliance on traditional employment opportunities.

Speaking at the launch of a Digital Apprenticeship Training Programme at the University of Ghana, Legon, on August 30, 2025, the Director of Technical Services at YEA, Sulemana Abdul-Salam, called on the youth to shift their focus from white-collar jobs to other viable career paths.

“Opportunities are not always readily available and many of us fail to take advantage of the few that come. Now, technology offers the chance to work remotely and earn an income without needing a formal office space,” Abdul-Salam said.

He added that e-commerce and other digital industries provide sustainable avenues for young people to earn money and urged them to acquire practical skills beyond the classroom.

The event was organised by NASCO Feeding Minds, in collaboration with the Mandela Washington Fellowship Association of Ghana and the La Caixa Foundation.

The initiative aims to provide practical training in digital entrepreneurship, offering participants skills such as graphic design, online business management and e-commerce.

Executive Director of NASCO Feeding Minds, Banasco Seidu Nuhu, highlighted the importance of equipping young people with digital skills to curb unemployment and discourage irregular migration.

“A lot of young people are full of potential but lack opportunities at home. With digital skills, they can use the internet to create sustainable businesses and income sources,” he said.

A final-year student who took part in the programme said the training had been impactful.

She noted that learning graphic design had given her a new pathway to start her own business and earn an income.

The Digital Apprenticeship Training Programme marks a push by stakeholders to provide Ghanaian youth with practical tools for self-reliance in an evolving digital economy.
