The Minister for Communications Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a warning to MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, following the company’s denial of any agreement to reduce subscription prices.
His statement comes shortly after MultiChoice Ghana released a press statement clarifying that it had not entered into any agreement with the government to reduce DStv prices, despite ongoing discussions with the Ministry.
In his response, the Minister described MultiChoice’s position as “disrespectful to Ghanaians” and vowed to proceed with enforcement action, including a possible shutdown of DStv services, if the company refuses to engage on price reductions.
“Let me be clear, I have no intention to continue tolerating the disrespect to Ghanaians by DStv. If MultiChoice is not interested, as they claim in their last statement, in discussing a reduction in prices as they had indicated to me, we would proceed to effect the shutdown tomorrow as indicated,” Sam George stated.
He explained that MultiChoice had earlier shown willingness to engage the Ministry over concerns about its pricing model and had requested the government to suspend its enforcement measures. However, he added that the company’s latest denial contradicted their earlier commitment.
“No company is above the law. When MultiChoice is ready to discuss price reduction, they can come to the negotiation table. Until then, there is nothing for us to meet over. The National Communications Authority (NCA) will carry out enforcement,” he stressed.
The Minister further emphasized that Ghana welcomes businesses, but only those that respect national laws and institutions.
