Aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye has criticized Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George over his handling of the ongoing standoff with MultiChoice Ghana on DStv subscription fees.

In a statement released, Mr. Aboagye accused the Minister of “spreading fake news” and dragging the entire country into what he described as an “ego fight.”

His comments come after Sam George warned of a possible shutdown of DStv services following MultiChoice’s denial of any agreement to reduce prices.

“The minister after being caught pants down spreading fake news is using the entire country to continue his ego fight. MultiChoice Ghana hasn’t breached any laws of Ghana so stop using laws of Ghana in your comments,” Aboagye stated.

He argued that DStv, as a private service provider, has the right to set its own prices, adding that dissatisfied customers can simply unsubscribe, as he personally has done.

“They provide a service and have set their prices. I think their prices are too high and I don’t want to pay so I have unsubscribed and moved towards Firestick. Others have done same,” he stated.

While acknowledging that the high cost of subscription is a concern, Mr. Aboagye insisted that the Minister’s approach amounted to blackmail rather than leadership.

“We want them to reduce their prices but surely, your approach is blackmail and threats. That’s not how to lead a sector!” he stressed.

He further cautioned that threatening businesses with shutdowns could send a negative signal to potential investors.

He challenged Sam George to point to any law MultiChoice has broken with regard to its pricing.
