The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has submitted a proposal to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), seeking approval for a 174% increase in its Distribution Service Charge for 2025.

NEDCo is requesting a new tariff of 153.03 Ghana pesewas per kilowatt-hour, up from the current 56.474 pesewas.

The company attributes the proposed hike to high operational costs across its vast service area, a limited customer base, and forex-denominated capital expenditures.

At a public hearing in Accra on Tuesday, September 9, NEDCo’s Director of Commercial, Hashim Iddrisu, stated.

“We expect that the new tariff will improve our performance, increase our collection rate, and reduce distribution losses from 31% to 21%.”

The proposal follows similar tariff requests from ECG, GRIDCo, and VRA, all citing financial sustainability and infrastructure demands as key drivers.

PURC is expected to review the submissions amid growing public concern over affordability and service reliability.
