The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a stern warning to residents of Mpatuam and nearby mining communities following violent clashes at the Asanko Gold Ghana Limited concession that left two people dead, including Assembly Member Samuel Danquah.

GAF in a statement cautioned residents to desist from arming themselves to confront the Ghana Armed Forces.

“The military wishes to caution the people of Mpatuam and all others in mining communities to desist from arming themselves to confront the Ghana Armed Forces,”.

According to the military, personnel were deployed to the concession in July 2025 after consultations with local security councils and community leaders to curb illegal mining and protect lives.

Tensions escalated on September 8 when troops encountered illegal miners in restricted zones. The miners fled, later alleging that one of them drowned in an abandoned pit.

The following day, protesters returned with the deceased’s body, placing it near the military base at Esaase. The situation spiraled as crowds attacked the concession, setting fire to 14 pieces of heavy-duty equipment. During the unrest, Mr. Danquah was injured and later died at a clinic in Nkawie.

“The situation was brought under control after reinforcements and firing of warning shots,” the statement added.

GAF expressed condolences to the bereaved families but emphasized the need for cooperation.

“We urge all citizens to cooperate with the Armed Forces and refrain from acts that endanger lives or undermine national security.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has launched investigations into the incident and the destruction of property.
