In a bold move to honor tradition and ensure a dignified environment, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced a mandatory citywide clean-up exercise on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

During this period, all shops, markets, and vehicles, both private and commercial, will be barred from operating.

The directive, issued by KMA Mayor King Zuba, is part of preparations for the final funeral rites (Doteyie) of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

The temporary shutdown affects major commercial zones and transport routes across Kumasi. Residents are urged to stay off the roads and suspend trading activities until midday.

The clean-up is being organized in collaboration with the Manhyia Palace, with support from security agencies, traders, transport unions, and volunteer groups. Even informal waste collectors have pledged their participation.

“This is not just about sanitation it’s about respect, unity, and pride in our heritage,” said Mayor King Zuba.

Priority zones include Manhyia Palace, Airport Roundabout, Adum, Kejetia, Ash Town, and surrounding neighbourhoods.

The KMA is calling on all citizens to take part in the exercise and help restore Kumasi’s reputation as the Garden City of West Africa.
