Tamale Central by-election: NDC candidate to be declared unopposed

Prof. Alidu Seidu Mahama

In a surprising political turn, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is poised to secure the Tamale Central parliamentary seat without contest, following the withdrawal of rival candidates from the race.

The by-election was necessitated by the untimely passing of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the sitting MP, who tragically died in a helicopter crash earlier this year.

Initially, three parties entered the race:

– NDC nominated Prof. Alidu Seidu Mahama

– Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) fielded Ibrahim Mohammed Hafiz

– People’s National Convention (PNC) presented Alidu Mohammed Nasir-deen

However, both the LPG and PNC candidates have officially withdrawn their nominations.

Their decisions, reportedly made out of respect for the late MP and strategic party considerations, leave the NDC candidate as the sole contender.

With no opposition, Prof. Mahama is expected to be formally declared the new Member of Parliament for Tamale Central on September 30, 2025.
