The Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned what it describes as “arbitrary and undemocratic” police violence against students of Tamale Technical University (TaTU), following disturbing scenes of officers allegedly assaulting unarmed student protesters.

In a statement signed by the National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, the Youth Wing expressed outrage over viral videos that captured the alleged assaults. The students were reportedly protesting to demand improved welfare conditions and greater transparency from the university administration.

“The use of arbitrary force on unarmed students and their leaders is unacceptable, undemocratic, and must be condemned by all Ghanaians,” the statement read.

According to the group, the situation should have been handled with professionalism and restraint, emphasizing that a competent and well-trained police force should prioritize dialogue over violence.

“Tamale Technical University is a citadel of knowledge, and such issues must be approached with sensitivity and care,” the Youth Wing noted, urging both students and university management to remain calm and peaceful.

The group further called on the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to take immediate action by calling the Northern Regional Police Command to order and ensuring that officers responsible for what it called “sordid and despicable violence” are held to account.

Highlighting the broader implications for Ghana’s democracy, the Youth Wing warned that the brutalization of young people for exercising their rights threatens the very foundation of democratic governance.

They pledged solidarity with the affected students and called for swift measures to restore calm, ensure justice, and allow academic activities to resume safely.

The incident has reignited national debate around police conduct and the right to peaceful protest, especially on university campuses, where students continue to advocate for improved infrastructure and better governance.
