The National Identification Authority (NIA) has refuted claims that the validity period of the Ghana Card is being reduced from ten years.

In an official statement signed by its Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, the NIA reaffirmed that the Ghana Card remains valid for ten years from the date of issuance, after which it must be renewed in accordance with the law.

The clarification follows the misinterpretation of comments made by the NIA’s Executive Secretary, Wisdom Kwaku Deku. The Authority explained that Mr. Deku did not announce any changes to the current policy. Rather, he mentioned that future reviews might explore shorter update intervals, taking into account ongoing technological advancements.

The NIA emphasized that the current ten-year validity period is still in effect. This duration, it noted, aligns with both the physical lifespan of the card and the expected changes in cardholders’ personal features over a decade.
