Ghana secures major diplomatic win as US reverses visa restrictions

The United States of America has lifted visa restrictions previously imposed on Ghana, restoring access to five-year multiple-entry visas for Ghanaian citizens.

The announcement was made by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who revealed that the decision was communicated to him by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker.

The bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday, September 26.

“This good news was directly communicated to me by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, at a bilateral meeting earlier today,” Ablakwa shared via his official Facebook page.

The reversal marks the end of visa limitations introduced in July 2025, when the US government restricted Ghanaian travelers to three-month single-entry visas. The Trump Administration had cited concerns over visa overstays, particularly among Ghanaian students.

Following months of high-level negotiations between Accra and Washington, the new policy restores broader consular privileges and is being hailed as a sign of renewed strength in Ghana–US relations.

Ghanaians can now look forward to improved travel flexibility, expanded opportunities for education and business, and a more robust diplomatic partnership between the two nations.
