The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights has lauded the government for increasing the daily feeding grant for prisoners from GH¢1.80 to GH¢5, describing it as a significant step towards safeguarding human dignity.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Committee, Ernest Yaw Anim, the Committee noted that the move aligns with Article 15 of the 1992 Constitution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 1, 2, 3, and 10.

The Committee further urged the Ministry of Finance to expedite the release of the GH¢10 million allocated for this purpose in the last quarter, as directed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Additionally, the Committee called on government to fast-track the completion of the remand block at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons and to prioritize the construction of a dedicated hospital for the Ghana Prisons Service.

According to Mr. Anim, the Committee remains committed to promoting a just, progressive, and inclusive society for all citizens, including those in custody.
