National Sanitation Day: DCE faces backlash over market relocation plans

A wave of protests has erupted in Gomoa Buduburam as local residents and executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) express strong opposition to District Chief Executive (DCE) Margaret Naana Ackom’s alleged plan to relocate a proposed 24-hour market complex from Buduburam to Gomoa Akotsi.

The demonstrators argue that the market project was originally promised to Buduburam by former President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang during their 2024 visit.

According to them, the two leaders pledged to upgrade the Buduburam market into a 24-hour economic hub to serve the entire Gomoa East District.

Speaking Happy Kaseɛbɔ’s, Atta Buabeng, Joseph Anambon, the Upper Ward Coordinator for Buduburam, stated that the community will resist any attempt to move the project. He emphasized that funding for the market has already been released, and accused the DCE of trying to divert the project to her hometown, Gomoa Akotsi, for personal reasons.

The Chief of Buduburam, Nana Kojo Essel, also voiced his concerns, claiming that all required documents have been submitted to the DCE. He accused her of playing political games referred to locally as “jandam” to shift the project away from its intended location.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Dogbe, Assemblyman for the Gomoa Buduburam Electoral Area, has called for calm but assured residents that he will not support any move to relocate the market to Akotsi.

As tensions mount, the people of Buduburam remain firm in their demand for transparency and adherence to the original development promise.
