A Circuit Court in Suhum has remanded a 25-year-old woman, Priscilla Owusua, also known as Adwoa, into two weeks’ custody for allegedly dumping her one-week-old baby boy into a toilet latrine at Ali in Suhum.

Owusua appeared before the court on Thursday, October 9, 2025, where the presiding judge ordered that she remain in remand custody to allow the police to conclude their investigations.

The case has been adjourned to October 21, 2025, for final hearing and prosecution.

The heartbreaking incident, which has left residents in shock, occurred on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, when residents of Ali, Newtown South, discovered the lifeless body of a baby boy inside a toilet pit.

Eyewitnesses said the community became alarmed after noticing an unbearable stench and a strange sight coming from the pit. They quickly alerted the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), who responded promptly.

An 11-member rescue team led by Assistant Station Officer (ASTNO) Henry Danso arrived at the scene around 6:30 a.m. and began a delicate retrieval operation. By 7:00 a.m., the team had successfully retrieved the baby, who was pronounced dead on arrival.

Preliminary investigations by the police identified Priscilla Owusua as the prime suspect. She is believed to have given birth secretly and, for reasons yet to be determined, allegedly disposed of the newborn in the toilet pit before fleeing.

After days of searching, police tracked Owusua to her residence at Konfa, near Suhum, where she was arrested.

She has since been charged with murder and child abandonment, pending further medical and forensic examination.

The baby’s body has been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy as investigations continue.
