Private Security Guard calls on government to intervene in low pay and welfare issues

The Private Security Guard Association of Ghana (PSGAG) has appealed to the government to take urgent steps to resolve challenges confronting the private security industry.

In an exclusive interview with Happyghana.com, the President of the Association, Roland Obibah Mensah, lamented the poor remuneration and unfavorable working conditions endured by private security guards across the country.

According to him, most guards earn between GH₵500 and GH₵800 monthly without any bonuses or allowances, despite working long hours often up to 12 hours a day.

He further noted that many of them have no insurance coverage, leaving them vulnerable in cases of accidents or emergencies.

Mr. Mensah disclosed that attempts to engage the private security companies to improve their employees’ welfare have yielded no results, as some companies insist that they are merely helping the guards secure jobs rather than being responsible for their welfare.

He revealed that the Association met with the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed, on October 2, 2025, and earlier with the Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, on April 14, 2025, to discuss their grievances regarding poor working conditions.

Mr. Mensah further urged the government to include private security personnel in its flagship 24-hour economy initiative, emphasizing that their dedication and vigilance could significantly contribute to national security.

He appealed to all members of the Association to remain calm and focused while discussions with relevant authorities continue, assuring them that their concerns would be addressed in due course.
