Galamsey activities have compelled the Ghana Water Company’s treatment plant at Akyem Kyebi and its surrounding areas to shut down since August this year. As a result, residents currently rely on tankers to supply clean water from Suhum to the affected communities.

An official of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) at the Akyem Kyebi Water Treatment Plant, Mr. Paul Akpanya, disclosed this information to journalists when the Steering Committee of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) toured Agona Kwanyako in the Central Region and other communities in the Eastern Region to assess the extent to which illegal mining has destroyed rivers and water bodies.

Mr. Akpanya further explained that the Ghana Water Company in the Suhum District has drilled four boreholes to enable tankers to draw water for supply to customers. He revealed that raw water sources at Osino, Bunso, and Kyebi have dried up, leaving no water to serve customers in the enclave.

He cautioned that if urgent measures are not taken to reverse the trend, the situation could deteriorate further.
