Hundreds of youth in Manso Nyankomase, a mining town in the Ashanti Region, have taken to the streets in protest against alleged military brutality during a land reclamation exercise.
The protesters blocked major roads, set vehicle tyres ablaze, and chanted war songs to express their anger and frustration.
The unrest followed a violent confrontation between military personnel and residents, leaving in at least five injured, with some sustaining gunshot wounds.
The military had been enforcing a government-backed land reclamation operation aimed at restoring degraded lands affected by illegal mining.
The youth, angry over the alleged assault on residents, demanded justice for the injured and an end to what they termed “military intimidation.”
Traditional leaders in the area have condemned the military’s actions and are calling for an independent investigation into the incident.
Residents have appealed to local authorities to intervene and ensure that future reclamation exercises are conducted peacefully and transparently.
